Traditional Medicine Practice Modules To Be Introduced In School Of Nursing, In Edo State

Edo State Traditional Medicines Board has concluded arrangements to collaborate with the Edo State College of Nursing Sciences, Benin City, Edo State in the teaching of traditional medicine courses in the College in order , to impact the teachings of traditional Medicine as supportive treatment for sick.
The Chairman, Edo State TMB, High Chief Traditional Dr. Abudu Ugbesia, JP, disclosed this today in an exclusive chat with Winning Media as the classes began today with the 200L Midwifery Students
Speaking, High Chief Ugbesia, who said; "The beauty of medicine is the restoration of the sick back to good health", also added that; "...Edo State Traditional Medicine Board, holds the health of the people of Edo State in High esteem, this is why we are doing everything we can to support the effort of our Governor, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, in the health sector, so we can take Edo State to the next level. We are determined to make impact, and God on Our side, we will definitely make impact".
In their visit to the Edo State College of nursing sciences to engage with the College relevant stakeholders, to formalize an agreement to integrate Traditional Medicine Modules into the Nursing curriculum, the Board's Secretary, Mrs. Ganiyat Uwaifo, said; "Edo State Traditional Medicine Board has come a long way. The Board celebrated 40 years of its existence last year, 2025, we are being proactive and doing things differently so as to have things to show for the 40 years of our existence, and we are very happy that we have a visioneer Governor and proactive Chairman that is giving us the support in achieving this".
"The traditional medicine practice models will be introduced into the College of Nursing sciences from the 2026/2027 academic session, She concluded.
Speaking with Traditional Doctor Pius Omofezi, a Practitioner of the Board and one of the Lectures appointed said that teaching the Traditional Medicines modules is a dream come through as we prayed that our heritage and pride of Traditional Medicine Practices be passed to our young generation. The lectures are full-time courses that will run all through the Nursing programmes, from the first year throughout the programme, in every semester".
Speaking on the purpose and need for the introduction of Traditional Medicine courses in the Nursing schools, Traditional Dr. Omofezi, said; "At the end of the day, we want to see young people understanding organic science properly. In School, we were taught organic and Inorganic science, but the emphasis here is to expose the students to organic science".
"Traditional medicine modules will introduce the students to the use of organic substances in treating sicknesses, and how it correlates with pharmaceutical Medicines".
"For instance, in my medical home, we use Traditional and Pharmaceutical Medicines to achieve our results. For example, in treating cancer patients, we combine Traditional Medicines with Pharmaceutical medicines. We use artificial intelligence, AI, techniques to achieve our goals".
Present at the visit of Edo State TMB team, to the College of Nursing are the Secretary to the Board, Mrs.Ganiyat V. Uwaifo, the Provost, Edo State College of Nursing Sciences, Mrs. Mabel Omobude, the Deputy Provost, Mrs. Oforogba Lawrenta Enogieru, Mrs. Violet Amen, the HOD, Nursing Department of the College of Nursing Sciences, Prof. (Mrs.) Ofeimun Josephine, of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Benin and Consultant to the TMB, Traditional Dr. Omofezi Pius, a Practitioner to the TMB, and Traditional Dr. (Mrs.) Owenaze Alice, a Traditional Medicine Practitioner and appointed Lecture
Others include, Mr. Idiagbonya Clement, the Head of Department, Traditional Complementary Alternative Medicine, of Edo State Traditional Medicines Board, Miss. George Judith, Mrs. Eni John, Miss theresa Aiyegbeni, Miss Jumoke of the Edo State Traditional Medicines Board.
