The new Chairman of Esan Central Local Government Area, Hon. Prince Abdullahi Momodu, has, within his first week in office, commenced efforts to address environmental sanitation and other pressing concerns across the Local Government Area.
As part of activities during the week of September 14–18, 2026, the Chairman inspected the Eguare and Idumu-Eguare Markets in Irrua, where he assessed the state of facilities and interacted with traders on some of the challenges affecting their businesses.
During the market inspection, Hon. Momodu directed the Environmental and Sanitation Department of the Local Government Council to urgently evacuate refuse from designated dump sites within the markets, stressing the need to maintain a clean and healthy environment for traders and residents.
The Chairman also paid a courtesy visit to the Enijie in Esan Central Local Government Area as part of his engagements with traditional institutions.
The visit provided an opportunity for the Chairman to formally inform the traditional rulers of his assumption of office and to seek their support, blessings and cooperation in the administration of the Local Government.
Hon. Momodu assured the Enijie that his administration would pay attention to the needs and concerns of communities across Esan Central and would intervene in areas requiring government attention, subject to available resources.
In a related development, the Chairman directed the Environmental and Sanitation Department to clear overgrown weeds within the premises of the Local Government Council Secretariat. Following this directive, the clearing of the overgrown weeds, as well as the fumigation of the local government Council premises, began yesterday, Thursday, 17th September 2026.
The directive, according to the Chairman, is part of efforts to improve the general appearance and sanitary condition of government facilities and create a more conducive environment for staff and visitors.
In another development, the Chairman, Esan Central Local Government Area, on Friday, 18th September 2026, sent key members of the National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, headed by Comrade Raymond Omomele, to visit Mr. Francis Ehinor, a member of staff of the local government, who has been hospitalized at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, ISTH, with a cash sum to ease his medical expenses.
Again, the Chairman ordered payment of the three months arrears owed the casual labourers of the Council, and the payment has been effected.
The series of engagements and directives marked some of the early activities of the new administration, with emphasis on environmental sanitation, engagement with traditional institutions and attention to community needs.
Commenting on the activities of the Environmental and Sanitation department, with respect to the directive of the Chairman, Sanitarian Akhere Egbele, Mrs, the Head of Department, HoD, Environmental and Sanitation Unit of Esan Central Local Government Area, said; "...our new executive Chairman, directed the Environment department that the overgrown grass within the Council, should be cleared. If you look beyond, the field has been cleared..."
"He has also given the directive that everyone should be involved in cleaning up their environment during the coming and subsequent monthly sanitation exercise".
The HoD Environment, also added that, the Chairman, Esan Central local government area also gave her the directive that overgrown weed in all the primary schools in the local government should be cleared, as schools are now resuming.
