Edo State TMB, Trado-medical Practitioners, Dispels Rumour of Faceoff

The Chairman, Edo State Traditional Medicines Board, TMB, High Chief Abudu Ugbesia, in an interactive session he held with Trado-medical practitioners in Edo state, on Monday, 10th of August 2026, cleared the air with respect to the rumour making the rounds with respect to the call for the registration of shrines and ancestral worship centres with the board.

The meeting which brought together traditional medicine practitioners, Princesses of Oluku goddess and Chief Priests of shrines was meant to sort out grey areas, and correct the misconceptions in some Quarters, that the board is poised to coerce practitioners to register their shrines, temples, and ancestral worship centres.


Speaking, Chief Abudu Ugbesia, said; "...as a traditional doctor, I must protect the interest of traditional medicine practitioners from intimidation, undue harassment by security agencies and interference from agencies of Government that may hamper the smooth operation of traditional medicine practitioners in health care delivery".

"This is a deliberate attempt to promote unity, foster oneness and harness the potential of traditional medicine practitioners for inclusive integration into health care delivery".


Continuing, the traditional medicine board Chairman said, as partners in progress, he expects practitioners to work assiduously with the board, to fulfill its statutory mandate, build synergy with the Government and not to engage in campaign of calumny to smear his hard earned image, and constitute a clog on the wheel of progress.


According to the Chairman, the board which was established in 1985, during the military Administration, in the defunct Bendel State, was in a state of comatose, until the present Administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo took a bold step to revitalise it for optimum performance, adding that, the law setting up the board is being amended by the Edo State House of Assembly to give it legal backing in conformity with the new trend in the practice of traditional medicine.

Speaking on some of the achievements of the board, in less than two years of it's takeoff, High Chief Ugbesia remarked that the ten hectares of land allocated to the board by Governor Monday Okpebholo from the state government forest Reserve in Uhuwonmde Local Government Area, have been fully cultivated. He announced plans to construct a traditional medicine hospital, where mentally challenged patients will be treated with herbs from the botanical garden.


Chief Ugbesia said; "...the good intention of Governor Monday Okpebholo to accord full recognition to traditional medicine practitioners should be reciprocated, adding that; "...those who are yet to register with the board, as well as others that are yet to renew their licence, should brace up without delay. He made it emphatically clear that he will not fold his hands and allow the board, and the practice of traditional medicine to go into extinction. Saying; "Traditional medicine practice is hereditary from father to children, and not for charlatans."

Various speakers at the meeting commended the leadership qualities of the board Chairman, and also commended the Chairman for advancing the growth of traditional medicine practice since his assumption of office.


They however called for a reduction of the registration fees for Practitioners.


Princess Helen Asekhame a member of the Board and Secretary of the Board Mrs. Ganiyatu Vivian Uwaifo attended the meeting.
