Edo State TMB Pushes For TBA's In Healthcare Delivery

Edo State Government has again, emphasised it's irrevocable commitment to providing effective, efficient, affordable and accessible health care services to Edo people in line with the SHINE AGENDA of Governor Monday Okpebholo led Administration.

Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Paul Eghemwenrio disclosed this at the opening ceremony of a workshop on "Effective Implementation of The Referral Policy", organised by the state Traditional Medicines Board, TMB, for Traditional Birth Attendants, TBA's, an event that held on Tuesday 4th August 2026 at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy, JOOPSA, Benin city, Edo State.

The effective implementation of the referral policy which had as it's Theme: "Safe Motherhood Through Timely Traditional Birth Referral" is geared towards integrating Traditional Birth Attendants' practice as an integral part in health care delivery in the state.

Dr Oshiomhole said the role of Traditional Birth Attendants is crucial in reducing maternal mortality and child morbidity as the present administration will not condole the ugly incident of preventable deaths of women during delivery, which is rampant in African countries where medical facilities are not only obsolete, but Medical Personnel are also in short supply.

Continuing, he said the administration of Senator Monday Okpebholo has given concrete and fundamental expression to adequate funding of the Health sector, renovation of primary Health care centres across the state and upgrading of General Hospitals in the three Senatorial districts, as well as the employment of professionals to strengthen health care delivery service.

In his comment, the Chairman, Edo State Traditional Medicines Board, High Chief Traditional Dr. Abudu Godwin Ugbesia, who pointed out that, the Board has trained one thousand Traditional Birth Attendants, also added that, the Board will continue to regulate the practice of Traditional Birth Attendants to enhance professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

Chief Ugbesia called for more collaboration amongst Traditional Birth Attendants, private medical practitioners and Government health facilities to promote inclusitivity and accelerate the growth of Traditional Birth Attendants' practice in the health sector.

 Chief Ugbesia announced that the Traditional Medicines Board is fully in support of the state government's campaign to dislodge the unwholesome activities of kidnappers and cultism who employ the service of herbalist to prepare charms to fortify themselves against arrest.

Chief Ugbesia warned any Traditional Medicines practitioner caught aiding and abetting kidnappers and cultists to perpetrate heinous crimes by preparing charms for them would be apprehended and handed over to law enforcement agencies for prosecution; saying; "...as a Board, we have zero tolerance for such criminal activities, as such we will not waste time in exposing anyone found wanting".

Chairman, Association of Nigeria private medical practitioners, Edo State chapter, Dr Godfrey Imuentinyan delivered a good will message, while the Chief Medical Director, Edo Specialist Hospital, Dr. Anthonia Njoku Inibokun represented by the Head of Obstetrics and gynaecology, Dr. Clement Ikponmwen also presented a good will message with unanimous decision to work for the common good of patients.


A panel of discussant made of health experts and Traditional Birth Attendants evaluated the essence of the referral policy implementation and agreed that early referral by traditional birth attendants when complications are noticed is key to saving lives.

The Chairman of the Board, assisted by the Secretary Mrs Ganiyatu Vivian Uwaifo presented referral forms to registered Traditional Birth Attendants to strengthen their practice in their various Local Government Areas.
