As Edo State Traditional Medicines Board, TMB, prepares to celebrate the 24th Africa Traditional Medicines Day, schedule to hold on Monday, the 31st of August 2026, at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy, JOOPSA, the Chairman of the Board, High Chief Traditional Doctor Abudu Ugbesia, JP, has emphasised on the need for Africans in general and Nigerians in particular, to continue to respect and take seriously our tradition and values; saying; "our heritage must be preserved and celebrated. This is why every year, we at the Edo State Traditional Medicines Board, make it a duty to celebrate Africa Traditional Medicines Day".

Speaking with Winning Media on the plans ahead for the event, High Chief Abudu said; “...the theme of this year's Africa Traditional Medicines Day, is Celebrating the Growth and Impact of Traditional Medicines in Public Health in Edo State.  The event will highlight the roles and potentials of traditional medicines in healthcare delivery, while promoting the responsible use of medicinal herbs".


"...the board is collaborating with the Edo State Ministry of Health to commemorate the event and stimulate the growth and development of traditional medicine practice in the state".


"...this initiative aligns with the health objectives of the administration of His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo and seeks to harness the potential of traditional medicine in improving healthcare delivery in Edo state". He said.


The upcoming Africa Traditional Medicines Day celebration, is expected to bring together traditional medicine practitioners, government agencies, healthcare stakeholders, Palace Chiefs, researchers and other relevant partners to discuss ways of strengthening and integrating traditional medicine into the healthcare system.


The Secretary of the Edo State TMB, Mrs. Ganiyatu Vivian Uwaifo, said the celebration will feature a panel discussion, cultural performances and presentation of awards to deserving recipients.


The African Traditional Medicine Day was established by the World Health Organization, WHO, in 2003, with Nigeria joining other African countries in commemorating the day annually.


The Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Paul Eighemhenrio, MNI, are expected to attend the event.
