Tree Planting, Should Be A Continuous Exercise In Edo State

Chairman, Edo state Traditional Medicines Board, TMB, High Chief Abudu Ugbesia, JP, has emphasised on the need for the planting of trees to be a continuous activity by individuals and corporate stakeholders, to ensure that some plants, roots and herbs do not become extinct in Edo state, saying; "...Apart from the fact that trees protects our environment from degradation, they are also very useful to us, as Trado-medical practitioner, in the preparation of various medicines".

Chief Ugbesia made this suggestion during an exclusive chat with Winning Media Online, after the Agency embarked on the planting of trees on the one hectre of land Botanical Garden, in Uhumwonde local government area, that was established by Edo state government, through Edo state Traditional Medicines Board.


The one-hectare Botanical Garden, located at Isi Village in Ehor, Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, is expected to serve as a centre for the cultivation, preservation and research of medicinal plants used in traditional healthcare.

Describing the project as a "historic achievement", High Chief Ugbesia, who hailed Governor Monday Okpebholo for approving the creation of the first ever Edo state Botanical Garden, and for reviving and supporting the Edo state Traditional Medicines Board, that has been in comatose over the years, also said; "...for us in Edo state Traditional Medicines Board, the planting of medicinal trees, is a continuous process, because roots and herbs are what we use in the treatment of sicknesses, just like our forefathers were used to, before the emergence of orthodox medicines". 


High Chief Traditional Doctor Ugbesia, who also encouraged individuals and corporate bodies to plant trees, emphasised that, every tree has its unique values, saying; " the Botanical Garden would in future, become a reference centre for herbal medicine research, conservation and practice in Edo State and across Nigeria.


Chief Ugbesia, also added that the project would create a lasting legacy for future generations while contributing to the advancement of indigenous healthcare.


Among the plant species so far cultivated in the garden are Cashew, Oil Palm, Lime and Moringa.


Present at the tree planting exercise, were the Secretary of the Edo State Traditional Medicine Board, Mrs. Ganiyat Vivian Uwaifoh; staff of the Board as well as staff of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.


Some Traditional Medicines practitioners, in Edo state, including High Chief (Dr.) Gaius Oyanyan, Amb. Chief (Dr.) Osabohien Zion Agbonghare, Princess Eniyemah, Princess Osazuwa and Chief Afeshehi, among others, were also present.


Edo state Traditional Medicines Board, TMB, was established in 1985.
