Illicit Drug Dealers To Face Prosecution By NDLEA  -Chairman, Edo  TMB.

The Chairman, Edo State Traditional Medicines Board, TMB, High Chief Abudu Godwin Ugbesia, JP, the Onagbonsoboleamen of Irrua Kingdom, has warned that any body found with illicit drugs under the guise of selling Herbal Medicines, (Agbo) will be handed over to the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for prosecution and reprimand.

 


The warning came on the heels of public outcry over the sale of illicit drugs by Agbo producers and sellers who most youths patronise, consume and become intoxicated, which eventually leads to mental disorder.


Chief Ugbesia who addressed a mammoth crowded meeting of Agbo producers and sellers in a meeting that held at the conference hall of the Board, in Benin, today, Tuesday 21st August 2026, blamed the escalation of hard drugs in the hands of youths to the illegal activities of some Agbo sellers, who are not recognised members of Edo State Traditional Medicines practitioners.


Chief Ugbesia said; "...the people engaged in these activities, have cultivated the ugly habit of adding hard drugs with Agbo and selling same to the public. This is unacceptable".


Chief Ugbesia, who is also the Odonebholo of Opoji kingdom, said; "...Edo State Traditional Medicines Board, under my watch, will not compromise the perpetration of illegality in the sale and distribution of illicit drugs which is harmful to human consumption, thereby eroding the value of effective health care delivery".


The Edo state TMB Chairman, who reiterated that, the state government's commitment to arrest the spate of insecurity and youths restiveness, aggravated by the consumption of hard drugs, traceable to Agbo sellers and hawkers, must be halted without fear or favour, also pointed out that; "To achieve a more efficient result, the Edo state Traditional Medicine Board, will profile the producers, and sellers of Agbo as a standard measure to filter out unscrupulous elements, who are engaged in unwholesome practices, thereby subjecting the image of Edo State Traditional Medicine Board to public odium".


The Chairman of the Board called on major stakeholders to join hands with the board in repositioning it for effective performance in line with the Shine Agenda of Governor Monday Okpebholo's administration, in integrating traditional medicine practice into Healthcare delivery.

     


Also, the President of 'Ifelodun Medicinal Concoction', Agbo producers, Chief Traditional Dr. Adeniji Omoboriowo, used the forum to renew his warnings to those involved in the sale of illicit drugs under the pretense of hawking Agbo for public consumption, to refrain from such illegal act, or be ready to face the full wrath of the law.

     


Responding on behalf of the producers of Agbo producers, Alhaja Aliu Modinatu, the Woman Leader of Yoruba community in Benin city, commended the the Chairman of Edo State Traditional Medicine Board for handling the issue of alleged sales of illicit drugs, by Agbo hawkers with a sense of maturity, without compromising on standards. She promised to sensitise members of Agbo sellers on the dangers inherent in the sales of illicit drugs which have been blamed on youth involvement in crimes and criminality.



The meeting was attended by the Secretary of the Board, Mrs. Ganiyatu Vivian Uwaifo and other Management of the Board, including Princess Helen Asekhame.
