Chief Ugbesia Condemns Activities of Herdsmen Over Grazing On Botanical Garden in Ehor.

The Chairman, Edo State Traditional Medicine Board, TMB, High Chief Abudu Godwin Ugbesia, JP, has warned herdsmen to refrain from grazing their cows on the Botanical Garden cultivated in Uhuwonmde Local Government Area.

Chief Ugbesia who led staff of the Board for the final stage of planting medicinal plants at the Botanical garden in Eguaholor, Uhuwonmde Local Government Area, condemned in strong terms, the destruction done to the Botanical garden by the unwholesome activities of herdsmen.


Chief Ugbesia who warned herdsmen to stringently control their cows while grazing, as the Botanical garden was allocated to Edo state TMB, from the state government forest Reserve in Ehor, also made it clear that, every inch of the garden, is not meant for grazing, saying; " grazing on the Botanical garden, can lead to the destruction of valuable herbs that are deliberately planted for the practice of traditional medicines”.     


In his evaluation of the efficacy of medicinal herbs in restoring the sick back to good health, especially with respect to serious ailments that has defiled orthodox medical practice, Chief Ugbesia said; “… the Botanical Garden which has been fully cultivated, will boost the practice of traditional medicines, which is an integral part of sustainable health care delivery”.


Chief Ugbesia, who commended His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo, for allocating the hectares of land to the Board, said; "...it is a testament of Governor Okpebholo administration’s unwavering commitment to stimulate the growth of the health sector, and strengthen traditional medicine practice in Edo State". Chief Ugbesia also reaffirmed his resolve to inject reforms into the Board, that will be geared towards making it more vibrant.


The Chairman, Edo State Traditional Medicines Board, while expressing confidence in the determination of Edo state government to build a Trado-medical hospital that will be using herbs from the Botanical garden, as an alternative to orthodox medical practice, hence, discourage medical tourism abroad, High Chief Abudu Ugbesia, the Chairman, Edo state Traditional Medicine Board, also announced plans to erect a perimeter fence round the Botanical garden, to forestall the activities of land grabbers, and also put an end to the destructive tendencies of herdsmen, as medicinal plants are sacred with the potency of ancestral blessings, which should be preserved for posterity.


Chief Ugbesia praised the resilience of staff of Edo state TMB for keying into the SHINE Agenda of the present administration. One of the members of the Board, Princess Helen Asekhame, and Secretary to the Board, Mrs. Ganiyatu Vivian Uwaifo, were also on the ground to mobilise staff of the Board, during the planting exercise.


The planting of more medicinal herbs, including coconut seedlings, concluded the final cultivation of herbal plants at the Botanical garden, the first of its kind since the establishment of the Board in 1985, in the defunct Bendel State.
