...as Gov. Okpebholo promised to sign death warrant

As part of the seriousness of Edo state government to put a stop to the incessant and questionable activities of kidnappers, cultists and other violent criminals in Edo state, the governor of Edo state, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo has warned that his administration will set up a special Court to speedily prosecute kidnappers and cultist in the state; saying, if such criminals fail to desist from committing crimes, they should be ready to face prosecution and possible execution if convicted.

Governor Okpebholo issued this warning on Thursday 18th June 2026 at the Edo state Police Headquarters in Benin City, where suspects of kidnappings, cultism and other similar crimes were paraded.


Speaking, Governor Okpebholo, who said, he will meet with the Attorney General on the setting up of a special Court to speedily prosecute kidnappers and cultists in the state, added that; "Within two weeks, the court will be done with proceedings, I will sign your execution, we will take you to ring road roundabout so that Edo people can watch. I will have no regrets about it. Don't take my simplicity for granted" governor Okpebholo warned.


Continuing, the governor of Edo state, who promised to make Edo state unsafe for criminals and their sponsors, also announced that he directed the Edo state Commissioner of Police, to ensure the arrest of the kidnappers that operated recently in Benin City vegetable market, and that directive was effectively carried out, as one suspect was arrested in the operation, while another was neutralised in the course of exchange of gun fire with the Police; adding that, others are currently at large.


Governor Okpebholo, who  rewarded the Police officers that arrested a suspect linked to kidnapping at the Vegetable Market with ₦10 million, Said; "criminals will never find peace in Edo. The message to all criminals is that they will not go free after committing crime in this state. You will be arrested". 


"We are ready for you and your sponsors. We are working day and night to make sure this land is safe,” he said.


The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, who confirmed that investigations were ongoing and that efforts are being intensified to arrest the fleeing members of the gang, thanked the governor for his support to the command.


Items recovered from the arrested suspect included a red Lexus RX 350 with registration number EKP 848 AE, a pump-action shotgun, two live cartridges, a motorcycle and cash totalling ₦2,250,000 suspected to be proceeds of crime.


CP Monday Agbonika reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and properties in the state and urged residents to continue providing credible information to security agencies.
