Monthly Sanitation Exercise In Esan Central:
...29 people convicted, fined

Today, Saturday 27th September 2025, twenty nine people were convicted for various offences of flouting the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Esan Central Local Government, ECLG, area, as they were made to pay fines ranging from two thousand naira, to ten thousand naira.
The two hours monthly environmental sanitation exercise started at 7:00 am, and ended at 10:00 am, and the level of compliance in the local government area, was impressive.
Speaking, Mr. Ernest Erebholo, the Head of Local Government Administration, HoLGA, who supervised the exercise, as the Chairman of the local government area, Rt. Hon. Kelvin Ainiyalenhimi Iyere, was away, on an official assignment, said; "...I want to say that the level of compliance is very high. Over time, we have been carrying out awareness programmes and people are getting aware, and now complying on their own".
"Before now, you can see the market is always filled up with people; but today, we didn't see such, except vehicular movements; and we arrested most of them and handed them over to the mobile court".
Also, the Head of Department, Environment, of the local government, Sanitarian Christiana Akhere Egbele, who thanked the Chairman, Rt. Hon. Iyere, for his efforts in ensuring that awareness is created, and people comply with the exercise, also expressed satisfaction over the level of compliance.
Describing the sanitation exercise as a perfect one, Sanitarian Egbele said twenty nine offenders of the exercise, were apprehended, and depending on the seriousness of their offenses, they were fined between two thousand naira, and ten thousand naira.
In her message to the people of Esan Central local government area, with respect to subsequent sanitation exercises, the HoD, Environment, of the local government area said; "collecting fines from offenders, is only a deterrent, to ensure that they observe the monthly sanitation exercise". More importantly, she said, is the participation and observance of the exercise by the people. She therefore, urged the people to always observe the exercise which comes up every last Saturday of every month.
In a telephone interview with Winning Media Online, the Chairman of Esan Central local government area, Hon. Kelvin Iyere, said; "...for us in Esan Central local government area, we have zero tolerance for filth. We don't condone filthiness".
I appreciate His Excellency,Governor Monday Okpebholo, the executive governor of Edo state, for introducing the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, even though it has been ongoing in Esan Central, before now".
"We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring the cleanliness of our environment".
Flouting the Edo state monthly environmental sanitation exercise is contrary to Section 7 (1), and punishable under Section (4) of the Public Health LAW, CAP 134, Volume 5, of the defunct Bendel state 1976, now applicable in Edo State.
