The Chairman, Esan Central Local Government, ECLG, area, Rt. Hon. Kelvin Iyere Ainiyelenhimi, early last month, February 2025, ordered for the cleaning of the debris that had accumulated in Irrua market for over seven years now, that always emit heavy stench of bad odour during every rainy season, to be evacuated, as he revealed that, monthly environmental sanitation exercise, to be observed throughout the local government area, will soon begin.
The debris was accumulated in one of the open stalls where, according to the traders, were dumped there by some of those resident close to the market.
Also, the Eguare-Usugbenu road, from the Eguare axis, all through to after the junction that led to the governor's house, was also attended to, as the road was littered with debris that washed off from adjoining streets, to the road.
The Usugbenu road was terribly littered with debris, because, the seating of the drainage/gutter constructed by the road side, was completely blocked, as it has never been cleared since the construction of the road by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole's administration.
In view of the above, the Chairman, first ordered for the evacuation of the 'caked' debris that had over the years, completely blocked the drainage/gutters, and several Tipper loads of debris were evacuated from the gutter.
The cleaning exercise of both Irrua market, and Irrua-Usugbenu road, that started on Monday, the 24th of February, 2025, lasted till Saturday, 8th of March 2025, even as the Chairman of the local government area, Rt. Hon. Iyere, during the cleaning exercise, emphatically maintained that, the exercise will continue, and will be observed throughout the local government area as special days of the month will be identified that the exercise will be taking place, saying; "...a Task Force will be set up for the purpose of apprehending those that may contravene the environmental sanitation instructions".
Also, Mrs. Christiana Egbele, the Head of Department, Environment, of Esan Central Local Government Area, who commended the Chairman of the local government for taking up the initiative to embark on the cleaning exercise, said; "we will do everything possible to support this initiative to ensure it is successful". She also added that, the Environmental department of the local government, has already started to identify flashpoint areas that efforts in this wise, will be concentrated on.
